What is the Family Law Act?
This legislation is part of the provincial government’s commitment to make family law simpler and easier for Albertans to understand.
Currently, provincial family law is spread over several acts including the Domestic Relations Act, Maintenance Order Act, Parentage and Maintenance Act, and parts of the Provincial Court Act. The Family Law Act updates, amends, and clarifies existing laws to ensure they are up-to-date for Alberta families in the 21st century.
The act was introduced during the AlbertaLegislature in May 2003 and passed in December 2003. It was brought into force on October 1, 2005.
