Criminal Injuries Review Board

The Criminal Injuries Review Board (CIRB) was established on November 1, 1997 and is an autonomous body assigned with the responsibility of reviewing decisions made by the Director of Victims of Crime Financial Benefits Program (or his/her designate) in accordance with the Victims of Crime Act. The requests for review to CIRB are made by individuals who are not satisfied with the decisions rendered by the Director. The decision of the Board is final except on a question of law or a question of jurisdiction, in which case, an appeal lies to the Court of Appeal of Alberta. If the decision is made under s. 14(5) of the Act, the judicial review lies with the Court of Queen’s Bench.

Members are appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council as recommended by the Minister.
