Strategic Directions

  1. Compile and expand upon the existing research and knowledge base regarding major risk and protective factors of criminality.
  2. Establish provincial crime prevention priorities based on research to create the greatest potential return on investment for Albertans.
  3. Explore ways to align programs and services to target provincial crime prevention priorities.
  4. Develop strategies to address gaps in crime prevention programs and services.
  5. Continue to engage communities in building capacity to address provincial crime prevention priorities.
  6. Work with communities to prepare local crime prevention plans to achieve provincial priorities.
  7. Examine ways to align future funding streams for crime prevention to promote more balance between enforcement and prevention.
  8. Measure outcomes and assess progress on a regular basis.

The work completed under the Framework’s eight strategic directions will first contribute to the achievement of the following outcomes:

  1. Risk factors for criminality are reduced.
  2. Protective factors to reduce/prevent criminality are strengthened.

Over time, the following five outcomes will become achievable:

  1. Crime is reduced.
  2. Severity of crime is reduced.
  3. Victimization is reduced.
  4. Harm to victims in society is reduced.
  5. Albertans have an increased sense of personal safety and community safety.

Framework announcement event

On May 10, 2011, the Alberta government continued its vision of building safe and strong communities and preventing and reducing crime by announcing the Crime Prevention Framework, which is in direct response to one of the Crime Reduction and Safe Communities Task Force recommendations.
