About the Office of the Public Trustee
The Office of the Public Trustee
The Public Trustee is appointed by the Government of Alberta under the Public Trustee Act to protect and manage the financial interests of vulnerable Albertans. The trust administrators, lawyers, taxation officers, auditors and support staff in the Office of the Public Trustee act on behalf of people with mental disabilities, administer the estates of deceased persons and protect the property interests of minors.
Protecting the financial interests of vulnerable Albertans... when no one else can.
The existing legislation for trusteeship and guardianship is the Adult Guardianship and Trusteeship Act, which came into force on October 30, 2009. This legislation replaced the Dependent Adults Act, which had been the legislation governing trusteeship and guardianship for over 30 years in Alberta.
The Adult Guardianship and Trusteeship Act can be found on the Alberta Queen's Printer website.
The Office of the Public Trustee exists to protect and administer the property of represented adults, minor children, and deceased persons, where there is no one else able to act.
